The Model's First Test Shoot Kit

Four looks, one gym bag. What agencies actually want to see from a first test — and none of it is complicated.

A test shoot exists to answer one question: what does this face and body do on camera? Which means the wardrobe's job is to change the question four times without ever answering it louder than you do. Agencies aren't hiring the clothes. The kit below fits in a gym bag and produces a full starter book.

Look one: fitted basics — the bodysuit or fitted tank with straight-leg denim. This is the agency polaroid look, and it goes first while your energy is highest, because it's the look with nowhere to hide. Look two: full denim or monochrome street — the commercial look that books catalog work. Look three: one statement silhouette, exactly one — a cape, a structured shoulder, a skirt with real volume. It shows you can carry fashion. Look four: motion — anything that flies when you spin. The frames between poses are the book's best pages.

What test wardrobe is not

It is not costume, not lingerie (a first test never requires it — treat any insistence otherwise as the red flag it is), and not head-to-toe trend. Every piece should be plain enough that ten years from now the photo dates you by nothing but the haircut. Iron everything; steam is the difference between a test and a snapshot. And bring simple shoes — nude heels and clean white sneakers cover all four looks.
