Edit No. 12 — Photoshoot Wear

The Maternity Edit

The shoot with a built-in deadline. Gowns that celebrate the silhouette, fabric that moves in wind, and nothing that fights a golden-hour field.

Maternity is the highest-stakes portrait genre there is: one window, weeks 28 through 34, when the silhouette is unmistakable and standing for an hour is still comfortable. Book inside it. Everything else in this edit is negotiable; the timing is not.

The wardrobe formula is one word: drape. Fitted through the bust, released everywhere else. Off-shoulder necklines are the genre's signature because they frame the collarbone while the fabric does the celebrating. Jewel tones — wine, emerald, that impossible red — photograph richer against skin and sky than pastels, which is why every maternity portfolio you admire leans dark.

Two looks fill a session: the gown for the classic frames, and something intimate — a lace robe or a wrapped stretch of chiffon — for the close, quiet ones. If there's wind, use it; a train that catches a gust is the single most-saved maternity frame on the internet. And bring the partner in neutrals so the color story stays hers.

The pieces

PIECE 01

Off-Shoulder Maternity Gown

The genre's signature silhouette — fitted bust, sweeping skirt, made for wind.

PIECE 02

Fitted Mermaid Maternity Dress

For the frames that celebrate the silhouette rather than drape it.

PIECE 03

Tulle Maternity Robe

Sheer volume for backlit golden-hour frames; layers over a simple slip.

PIECE 04

Lace Robe

The intimate second look — soft, forgiving, beautiful in window light.

PIECE 05

Chiffon Draping Fabric

Six yards of fabric is the cheapest gown you'll ever shoot. Wrap, tuck, let it fly.

PIECE 06

Flower Crown

Field-shoot staple; keep it loose and one palette with the dress.

PIECE 07

Satin Belly Bow

A single ribbon above the bump reads sweet without going literal.

PIECE 08

Partner's Neutral Henley

Keeps the color story hers; photographs texture, not competition.
